What Do Divers Do in Low Season?

How is summer going so far?

Here in Playa, the sticky heat of summer mixed with fewer tourists has slowed things way down to proper Caribbean time. I've been spending my days working in the office on underwater photography editions when I'm not on the boats diving.

I've also been spending more time off the clock doing fun things with my community here. Recently, I've taken over a Tarot reading group which has been such a fun new medium to learn.

I've also been doing LOTS of acroyoga and handstand training. There's actually a brand new handstand class in town - taught by a lovely friend - which is perfect for all levels, from beginners to experts.

That's what I've been up to lately, but share how your summer has started! Leave a reply, or send me a message on Facebook or Instagram :)

Whale Sharks in Cancun

Swimming with whale sharks in Cancun is often promoted as an unforgettable, eco-friendly adventure. But is it actually ethical?

Every summer, hundreds of whale sharks gather off the coast of Cancun to feed on plankton, attracting thousands of visitors eager to swim alongside the world's largest fish. While Mexico has regulations in place to protect these endangered animals, the reality of whale shark tourism is more complex than many people realize.

Responsible tourism can help fund conservation efforts and create incentives to protect whale sharks. However, growing numbers of boats and swimmers may also place pressure on the animals, even when operators follow the rules.

The real question isn't whether swimming with whale sharks is good or bad. It's whether the experience is being conducted in a way that puts the sharks' welfare first.

In this article, I explore the conservation concerns, the benefits of responsible tourism, and the questions every traveler should ask before booking a whale shark tour in Cancun.

Would you swim with an endangered animal in the wild if it were done responsibly? 🌊

Beneath the Surface

Unfortunately, we haven't been diving much lately. Once or twice a week compared to twice a day during the high season. I am

But for me, this forced break from the ocean has actually been a good thing.

It means that every dive is a little bit more sacred, not knowing when my next dive will be.

I am learning not to take a single moment underwater for granted.

I'm sure you relate to this. During a dive, when nothing big is swimming by, taking your breath away, and you forget to appreciate where you are. It feels a bit like disassociation when you are driving your car on a boring stretch of road.

I'm not proud of it, but I have moments like this almost every dive. It's hard to stay focused and engaged for a full 45 minutes without my brain running away from me.

But lately, I've been practicing coming back to the present moment and staying alert for the whole dive.

Practicing gratitude in the middle of my dives - for where I am and the fact that I get to do this - has been a really powerful practice.

Marina's Mindful Moment

Before I close this newsletter, I hope to share a bit of much-needed mindfulness with everyone. Take a moment to reflect on this, or even pull out your journal if you feel so inclined:

What is something you do every single day on autopilot?
Is there a way you can find a sparkle within that task?
How can you deepen your appreciation for that mindless task?

Think of this and journal some ideas. When you start the mindless task, say what you appreciate about it out loud.

For example, I say "I am washing dishes because it demonstrates how I value my home," on days when I find myself absent-mindedly cleaning the kitchen at the end of the day.

Thank you for taking this mid-month pause with me. I hope these reflections help you slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with what matters most.

Until next time,
Marina

Can't wait until the end of the month to connect again? Here are some other ways you can reach me in the meantime :)

Breathing My Way Through May How has your month felt so far? For me, May is flying by too quickly to process. In between all of the underwater adventures, I have been advancing my meditation practice by learning all about breathwork. I've noticed that being intentional with my breath has actually made my diving better. My buoyancy feels more reliable, and I find myself staying calmer underwater in situations that normally would've increased my stress response or, in all honesty, made me a bit...
